What is "solution treatment"?

What is "solution treatment"?

A metal heat treatment process in which the alloy is heated to an appropriate temperature and held for a long enough time to dissolve the soluble phase into the solid solution matrix and then rapidly cooled to room temperature.

In most books and periodicals in China, solution treatment is often regarded as a form of "quenching" with a broader meaning, because the solution treatment process adopts rapid cooling operation. However, in some literatures, the meaning of solution treatment is limited to heating and heat preservation, and the subsequent rapid cooling is separately called "quenching".

Explanation of "solution treatment" in academic literature.

If the alloy is heated to the temperature at which the second phase completely or maximally dissolves into the solid solution for a certain period of time, and then it is cooled rapidly to prevent the second phase from precipitating again until the supersaturated solid solution is obtained at room temperature, this heat treatment is called solid solution treatment

For example, the reason why austenitic stainless steel has good corrosion resistance is that the electrode potential of its matrix is high, so it is not easy to produce electrochemical corrosion. However, after various hot working, a kind of carbide with high chromium content will be formed inside the austenitic stainless steel: Cr23C6, The purpose of solution treatment is to eliminate the existing Cr23C6, make it dissolve into austenite again, and improve the corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steel. And what you said is mainly produced by cold forming, and can also be eliminated by solution treatment.
