Difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel

1. Different properties, 304 steel can resist sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, potassium acid, urea and other corrosion.

2. It is suitable for general water use, gas control, alcohol, milk, CIP cleaning fluid and other occasions with little corrosivity or no contact with materials.

3. The average nickel content of 304 stainless steel is 9%, while that of 316 stainless steel is 12%. Nickel in metal materials can improve high temperature durability, mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. In addition, the addition of molybdenum element in 316 steel on the basis of 304 can significantly improve its resistance to intergranular corrosion, oxide stress corrosion, and reduce the warm tendency during welding. It also has good resistance to aluminum chloride corrosion.

 4. Chloride corrosion resistance. 304 stainless steel is non-magnetic and can not be changed by heat treatment.

5.316 stainless steel has a special corrosion resistance structure due to the addition of molybdenum element, which has stronger resistance to chloride corrosion, and is also used as "marine steel".

In a word, the corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and strength of 316 stainless steel are better than those of 304 stainless steel, which can be used in more severe conditions, but the cost is also higher than that of 304 stainless steel.
